Featuring nearly 50 works of art from Western Pennsylvania and beyond, this exhibition is a collaboration between The Center and the Affrilachian Art Project, headed by Marie Cochran, independent art curator and professor working in North Carolina and Georgia. This exhibition features local and regional artists—emerging and established—whose works typify the themes and sensibilities that spring from rural and urban life in the Appalachian region.

24th Carroll Harris Simms Black Art Competition and Exhibit
Black artist across the nation compete for awards in the categories of Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography and Mixed Media. Winning artwork entries in the various categories have become part of the Museum's permanent collection. The Competition is named in recognition of Mr. Simms' outstanding contribution to art and art education. He joined the faculty of Texas Southern University (formerly Texas State University for Negro's) in 1950 and was co-founder of the art department. Professor Simms served on the faculty until 1987. Simms developed a unique program of ceramics and sculpture at the University. The body of Terra Cotta Shrine sculptures created by Professor Simms' students represents a distinct contribution to the evolution of Twentieth Century African American sculpture.

Pellum, Bobby Scroggins, Erin M. Smith, Antoine Williams, Samuel O. Williams and Kevin Willis

Exhibtion juried by Kevin Cole. Mr. Cole received his B.S. University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, M.A. in Art Education, University of Illinois at Urbana, and M.F.A. from Northern Illinois University. Within the last 20 years, he has received 34 Grants, 18 Fellowships, 54 Awards in Art, and 56 Teaching awards. Mr. Cole's work has been exhibited in over 450 exhibitions and in over 1500 public, corporate, private and museum collections. Recently the Smithsonian Museum of Art in Washington DC and the William Jefferson Clinton Library in Little Rock Arkansas acquired pieces of his art work. He has created over 30 Public art commissions. Mr. Cole is also an Art Consultant for Savannah College of Art in Atlanta, GA.

The African American Art Exhibition celebrates African American history and culture through the arts. This year’s 17th annual African American Art Exhibition at Actors Theatre of Louisville will be on display from January 4 – February 13, 2011. The exhibition will run concurrent with the theatrical production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a searing drama about Blues legend Ma Rainey and her band. Actors Theatre is a not-for-profit professional regional theatre located in the heart of downtown Louisville, Kentucky. We may not always see just how

The weavings intertwine

But we must trust the Masters hand and follow his design

For he can view the pattern

Upon the upper side,

While we must look from underneath

And trust in him to guide...

Sometimes a strand of sorrow

Is added to his plan

And though its difficult for us

We still must understand

That its He who fills the shuttle

Its He who knows whats best

So we must weave in patience

And leave to Him the rest...

Not until the loom is silent

And the shuttles cease to fly

Shall God unroll the canvas

And explain the reasons why

The dark threads are as needed

In the weavers skillful hand

the threads of gold and silver

This "family tree" was created for a Women of Visions exhibit in Pittsburgh called "Migrations' It is about how the Kemp family came from Virginia and ended up in Cecil Pa in Reising Hollow. It has recieved some local and national attention and Im always looking for more family photos since there are quite a few 'empty " frames on this piece!!!!

Here is a picture of me weaving at my loom so you can compare with the Kente weaving. Ill learn his way one day. My loom weaves 52" his loom weaves 4" Hes fast as lightning and Im slow as a snail but both ways turn out beautiful fabric.

This is a public art project for the New Childrens Hospital in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania . It was an artist residency provided by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts where I was an artist in residence before moving to Columbus Ohio in January 2009. The participants for this project were 2 seperate groups of students from the YWCA summer camp and the Abraxas Girls School .The flowers and leaves on this 3 d quilted sculpture are part of a larger project and contain prayers for the children in the hospital. This multi faceted project allowed the participants to experience a range of fiber art activities such as regular and shibori dying, sewing and beading, felting and quilting.
